Award German Civil Engineering Prize 2020

As one of the contributions of high engineering quality, the Regensburg Synagogue project received one of the coveted awards at this year's German Engineering Prize. The prize is awarded every two years and, as a state prize, is the most important award for civil engineers in Germany. Thus, the project, for which ZÜBLIN Timber was responsible for the accompanying planning and production of the complex roof construction, has already been honoured with the 2nd award this year.

For the third time, the German Civil Engineering Award was jointly sponsored by the Federal Ministry of the Interior, the Federal Ministry for Building and Homeland Affairs and the Federal Chamber of Engineers and this year it went to the Kienlesberg Bridge in Ulm.

The range of works submitted for the 2020 prize was wide. In addition to building construction and constructive civil engineering projects, the participants also addressed the sustainable use of resources such as building in existing buildings and constructional solutions using renewable raw materials.

The award ceremony will take place on 24 November 2020 in the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities, Berlin.

New school complex in Aspern, Vienna

The second large school complex in Vienna’s Seestadt Aspern development area is now under construction. The building will provide space for around 1,400 school-age and pre-school students and will accommodate a total of five educational institutions under a single roof. Wrap-around balconies and terraces on all levels with stairs leading to a large garden will offer a high quality of life for both students and teachers. Seestadt Aspern in the east of Vienna is one of the largest urban development projects in Europe. The new district will provide living space and employment for around 20,000 people. This new school complex is one of several projects to ensure the necessary educational infrastructure in the area.

The school building was designed as a free-standing structure with staggered floors. The timber construction division of Ed. Züblin AG is responsible for the planning, production and assembly of the façade surfaces in this STRABAG construction project. Approx. 4,500 m² of façade surface will be built as framed glazing with a glulam larch frame, including approx. 90 m³ or 5,660 lineal metres of wood/aluminium insert elements. The building is scheduled to open at the beginning of the 2021/22 school year.
